Voice dictation is not working

The Voice button lets you describe your spin out loud instead of typing. If it is not picking up your words, here is what to try, simplest first.

Step 1: Speak a little slower and clearer

  1. Open the Log tab, tap Log Spin, and go to the Paint the picture step.
  2. Tap Voice. The button changes to Stop while it listens.
  3. Hold the phone about a hand's width from your mouth.
  4. Speak in a clear voice, a bit slower than usual. For example: "The room started spinning when I rolled over in bed. Felt sick. About seven out of ten."
  5. Tap Stop when you have finished.
  6. Your words appear in the text box. Tap Find matches to let the app pick out the details.

Step 2: Check microphone permission

The first time you tap Voice, your phone asks whether VertigoMe can use the microphone and speech recognition. If you said no, the button cannot work, and the app shows "Permission needed".

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Find VertigoMe and tap it.
  3. Switch on Microphone.
  4. Switch on Speech Recognition too.

On Android

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then VertigoMe.
  3. Tap Permissions, then Microphone, and choose Allow only while using the app.

Go back to VertigoMe and try Voice again.

Step 3: Move somewhere quieter

Background noise, such as a television or traffic, can confuse speech recognition. Try a quiet room.

Step 4: Check you are online

On many phones, speech recognition uses the internet. Check that a web page loads, then try again.

Step 5: Check VertigoMe's language

VertigoMe listens in the app's own language. If the app is set to one language and you speak another, the words come out wrong.

  1. Tap the gear icon in the top-left.
  2. Tap Language.
  3. Pick the language you speak.

Step 6: Close the app and try again

Another app (a call, a video, a voice note) may still be holding the microphone.

On iPhone

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle.
  2. Find the VertigoMe card and swipe it up off the screen.
  3. Tap the VertigoMe icon to open it again.

On Android

  1. Tap the square button at the bottom (or swipe up and hold).
  2. Find VertigoMe and swipe it away.
  3. Tap the VertigoMe icon to open it again.

Step 7: Restart the phone

On iPhone

  1. Press and hold the side button and either volume button until slide to power off appears.
  2. Slide to power off.
  3. Wait about thirty seconds.
  4. Press the side button to turn it back on.

On Android

  1. Press and hold the power button.
  2. Tap Restart. If you only see Power off, tap it, wait a minute, then press the power button again.

You can always type

Voice is optional. Type your description in the same box and tap Find matches, or skip Paint the picture and fill in each step yourself.
