The exercise coach is not picking up my position

The guided exercises use your phone's motion sensors to measure your head angle and tell you when you are in position. If the coach seems stuck on a step, or the gaze trainer says it cannot see you, try these steps.

The steps are the same on iPhone and Android.

Step 1: Hold the phone the way the coach asks

For the Epley, Semont, BBQ roll, Brandt-Daroff and habituation exercises, the phone measures your head, so it has to move with your head.

  1. Hold the phone in front of your face like a mirror.
  2. Keep it with your face the whole time. When you turn or tip your head, turn or tip the phone too.
  3. Stay still during the first step, GET SET. That is where the coach measures your starting position.

The balance exercise does not measure anything. The coach just times each stance, so the phone can sit nearby or in a pocket.

Step 2: Use "I'm in position"

Some moves, such as a head turn while lying flat, are hard for a phone to measure. If you are in the right position but the coach has not noticed:

  1. Tap I'm in position. The hold timer starts.
  2. To move to the next step yourself, tap Next. To repeat a step, tap Back.

You never have to wait for the sensors to let you through.

Step 3: "Motion sensors unavailable"

If you see this message when you tap Start guided run, the device has no usable motion sensors. The guided exercises need a real phone, held in your hand.

Step 4: Gaze trainer cannot see you

Gaze stabilization can use the front camera to watch your head turns. If it says Can't see you or "Looking for you":

  1. Hold the phone at arm's length, at eye height, facing you.
  2. Make sure your face is well lit, with no bright window behind you.
  3. Check that VertigoMe is allowed to use the camera in your phone's settings.

The camera is optional. If you tap Camera coach off, or do not allow the camera, the trainer still runs with its ticking pace and voice.

Step 5: Turn the voice on

If you cannot hear the coach, check Voice on is showing on the start screen, and that your phone's volume is up and not on silent.

Step 6: Close and reopen VertigoMe

On iPhone

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle.
  2. Find the VertigoMe card and swipe it up off the screen.
  3. Tap the VertigoMe icon to open it again.

On Android

  1. Tap the square button at the bottom (or swipe up and hold).
  2. Find VertigoMe and swipe it away.
  3. Tap the VertigoMe icon to open it again.
